Net Screen + LED

Tarik Mendes’ Net Screen + LED works expand his layered screen practice through the integration of artificial light. Combining translucent net and screen structures with LED illumination, the works explore how light can become both a material and an active component of an artwork.

Layers of net, color, image, structure, and illumination interact to create compositions that change according to viewing angle, surrounding conditions, and the intensity and direction of light. Rather than simply illuminating the artwork, the LED elements become part of its visual and physical construction.
Transparency allows light to travel through and between multiple surfaces, revealing different images, shadows, patterns, and spatial relationships. Elements that appear dominant from one position can dissolve or transform from another, creating an experience that changes as the viewer moves.

The Net Screen + LED series extends Tarik Mendes’ investigation of connectivity, repetition, permeability, movement, and flux while further dissolving the boundaries between painting, sculpture, light art, and installation.
By combining layered screen structures with illumination, Mendes transforms the artwork from a static surface into an environment responsive to light and space. The resulting works explore the relationship between material and immaterial elements—between physical structure and the light passing through it.
Net Screen + LED represents an evolving dimension of Tarik Mendes’ multidisciplinary practice, using light to activate layered structures and create artworks that continually shift between image, object, sculpture, and illuminated installation.
